All Night Jazz Focus Artist of the Week: Billy Drummond

This week on All Night Jazz, we’ll focus on versatile studio drummer Billy Drummond.

Born on June 19, 1959, in Newport News, Virginia, Drummond has worked with Horace Silver, Sonny Rollins, Joe Henderson, Carla Bley and many others. A highly in demand as a session player, he’s appeared as a sideman on over 300 recordings. Critic Stanley Crouch says Drummond has “the kind of highly refined musical intelligence that Max Roach brought to drumming,”

Drummond played at the White House when Sonny Rollins was presented the National Medal of the Arts from President Barack Obama in 2011.

We’ll hear the rhythmic stylings of drummer Billy Drummond all week long, on All Night Jazz.
