WUSF All Night Jazz Focus Artist of the Week: Hank Mobley

Hank Mobley.

This week on All Night Jazz, we’ll focus on legendary tenor saxophonist Hank Mobley. Born on July 7, 1930, Mobley was a pioneer of the hard bop movement, which brought jazz back from the “cool” era to a more driving, yet soulful sound. His early work with Art Blakey and Horace Silver led to a prolific career on the Blue Note Records label, where he had over 20 recordings as a leader and countless others as a sideman. He later replaced John Coltrane in the Miles Davis Quintet.
