Bryan J. Hughes sings the music of Duke Ellington

In this edition of Side Door at the Palladium, singer Bryan J. Hughes performed a tribute to Duke Ellington, featuring St. Petersburg-based bass player John Lamb, who played for Ellington in the 1960s.


Also in the band, drummer Jean Bolduc, bassist Alejandro Arenas (from La Lucha and Orilla), and pianist John O’Leary (also from La Lucha).


On horns, it’s James Suggs on trumpet, Mike Scaglione on sax, and Teddy Mulet on trombone.

On Friday, October 29, we shared music and conversation with pianist John O'Leary, who stopped by WUSF studios to talk to our Mike Cornette about his concert at The Palladium at St. Petersburg College.


John, best known for his work with the group La Lucha, has a new album coming out on Arbors Records, featuring Snarky Puppy keyboardist Shaun Martin who both produced the album and played on it!

 "Side Door at the Palladium" Featuring a Performance by James Suggs

This month's Side Door at the Palladium series features a performance by trumpeter James Suggs. The concert was originally a live-stream-only broadcast that aired in October 2020. It was part of their "Palladium Live" series.  The band features Jeremy Carter on saxophone backed by the jazz trio La Lucha, with Mark Feinman on drums, John O'Leary, keyboards, and Alejandro Arenas on bass.

Music and Conversation with Nate Najar and Daniela Soledade


On Friday, August 20, All Night Jazz aired a special edition of Jazz Club Friday with an in-studio performance and conversation with guitarist Nate Najar and singer Daniela Soledade.


The pair talked with our Mike Cornette about their various projects, including Nate’s upcoming show, “Nate Najar’s Jazz Samba Celebration,” at The Palladium at St. Petersburg College on Friday August 27.


Daniela discussed their recent trip to Brazil which resulted in a collaboration with the legendary guitarist and composer Roberto Menescal.

 "Side Door at the Palladium," Featuring Daniela Soledade and Nate Najar

On Friday, August 6th, at 10:00 pm on WUSF, we aired another edition of our monthly series "Side Door at the Palladium," featuring music recorded at The Palladium at St. Petersburg College. This month we will air a show by Tampa-based singer Daniela Soledade featuring guitarist Nate Najar, in a concert recorded at the Palladium for a live stream performance on April 23, 2021. The band features Patrick Bettison (keyboards, harmonica and percussion); Joe Porter on bass; Jean Bolduc drums; Alvon Griffin on percussion; and Yves Dharamraj on cello.


"Side Door at the Palladium" airs the first Friday of every month on WUSF as a special edition of our show, Jazz Club Friday.


Music and Conversation with Tampa Singer Bryan J Hughes

Bryan talked about his show: "A Duke Ellington Celebration," this Saturday August 7 at The Palladium at St. Petersburg College. Joining Bryan in studio are John O'Leary, piano, Jean Bolduc, drums and Alejandro Arenas on bass.


The Palladium concert will feature a host of guest artists including Duke Ellington alumnus and Bay area bassist John Lamb.

In Studio Performance by Tampa-Based Jazz Trio La Lucha

Drummer Mark Feinman, keyboardist John O'Leary and bassist Alejandro Arenas talked with our Mike Cornette about their upcoming show "The 80's Jazz Party," at The Palladium at St. Petersburg College this Saturday July 31 at 8:00 p.m.


They also played a few tracks from the show that features jazzy re-arrangements of 1980's new wave and pop songs from artist like Peter Gabriel and Wham!


Joining La Lucha at the WUSF session, was singer and keyboardist Ona Kirei, who will be one of several guest artists at the concert, including singer Shella Siddiq and trumpeter James Suggs.

This Friday on All Night Jazz at 10:00pm, it's a special edition of Jazz Club Friday, featuring music and conversation with singer Ona Kirei and bassist Alejandro Arenas. They talk with our Mike Cornette about their new group they call Orilla, which will perform at The Studio@620 in St. Petersburg on Friday, July 30. Tune in this Friday (July 23) at 10:00pm on WUSF 89.7 for a performance by Orilla.

Jazz Club Friday with Synia Carroll

Singer Synia Carroll and pianists John O'Leary stopped by WUSF studios for music and conversation with WUSF's Mike Cornette. Synia talked about a pair of upcoming concerts dedicated to the music of singer Nina Simone, "Nina on My Mind." You can hear the performance this Friday at 10:00pm on WUSF 89.7

Ona Kirei on Side Door at the Palladium

This Friday July 2nd at 10 p.m. on WUSF 89.7, it's another edition of our monthly series, "Side Door at the Palladium" with music recorded at The Palladium at St. Petersburg College. This month we present singer Ona Kirei, performing "This Bird as Flown, a Jazz Tribute to the Beatles."


The show debuted in May of 2020 as a live-stream only performance. Born in Spain, Kirei is a vocalist, composer, and arranger who now lives in Tampa. Her band consists of Dominic Walker on guitar, who helped Ona conceive the project (and is an All Night Jazz DJ!), along with Pablo Arencibia, piano; Alejandro Arenas, bass, and Jean Bolduc, drums.

This month a very special concert celebrating the 85th birthday of former Duke Ellington bassist and long-time Bay area resident John Lamb. Recorded on January 6 2019, it was produced and directed by St. Petersburg-based guitarist Nate Najar.

Ona Kirei Recorded Live on Side Door at the Palladium

This month's edition of "Side Door at the Palladium" features music recorded in concert from Spanish-born singer Ona Kirei and her group, Iberian Project. This performance was recorded on August 15, 2019 at The Palladium at St. Petersburg College. 

Synia Carroll "A Crazy Little Thing Called Love" - Florida Studio Theatre

Sarasota based vocalist Synia Carroll joins All Night Jazz host Mike Cornette for music and conversation as she prepares for her Valentine’s Day concert: “A Crazy Little Thing Called Love” at the Florida Studio Theater in Sarasota on February 13th. Backing up Synia in the studio are Billy Marcus on piano, Don Mopsick on bass and Steven Bucholz on drums. Original air date - 2/20/2017

The members of the band, La Lucha, got to know one another at USF several years ago. The trio’s latest album, ‘Standards Not Standards,’ received airplay around the country and has been a favorite this year here at WUSF. They stop by All Night Jazz for a visit and performance.
